My music is for the whole world to enjoy. It touches the heart, whatever the language. With upbeat songs that combine many cultures' influences, sounds that are warm, with good dancing rhythms, sounds that make you want to move and feel great. That is what I want for myself, my family, my planet.
— Elage Diouf
A sensational Senegalese soul-rocker
Master percussionist, Senegalese born singer-songwriter and performer Elage Diouf settled in Canada in 1996, to pursue a musical career that is still growing today.
His music – a blend of pop, world, blues, folk and asiko - thrives at the artistic crossroad of artists like Carlinhos Brown, Peter Gabriel and Andres Cepeda. The musicality of the wolof language explains his singing mainly in his mother tongue.
Wholehearted in his artistic approach, charismatic, authentic and easygoing in his personal as well as his public life, people love him, and he clearly loves them back. His live performances are noticed thanks to his knack at inciting public participation by dancing, by singing, and by inviting people to come up on stage and dance with him. The warmth and remarkable quality of his voice as well as his varied influences make him a unique artist.
Élage Diouf was known in the first place for his innumerable collaborations, such as with André "Dédé" Fortin and his band, les Colocs. As the co-writer for the song Tassez-vous de d'là, Élage Diouf received the SOCAN Echo prize. His numerous other collaborations brought about his joining, as a featured performer, the world tour of the Cirque du Soleil's Delirium show, during which he takes part in more than 200 representations in the largest cities around the world and gains an unparalleled scenic experience.
Aksil: a festive first album
A renowned star in his native Senegal, he officially made a name for himself in Canada in 2010 with his first solo album, Aksil ("welcome" in wolof). This album received many accolades, namely a JUNO Award for World Music Album of the Year (CANADA) and a FÉLIX for the World Music Album of the Year at the Gala de l'ADISQ (Québec). Élage was named Artiste Révélation Radio-Canada by the national public broadcaster (CBC) and received the SOCAN Hagood Hardy – World Music prize. He also received the Galaxie Rising Star Award for his performance at the Mundial Montreal show.
Melokáane: a thoughtful second album
In 2015, Elage launched his awaited second solo album, Melokáane, ("reflection" in wolof). Co-produced by Elage and Alain Bergé, the album offers many collaborations such as with multiplatinum singer Johnny Reid and guitarist Jordan Officer. Melokáane receives many accolades, including a nomination for World Music Album of the Year at the Gala de l'ADISQ (Québec), and a nomination for World Solo Artist of the Year at the Canadian Folk Music Awards (CANADA).The album also allows Élage Diouf to be a finalist for the Charles-Biddle prize, and to receive a certification from the Québec Ministry of Immigration, Diversity and Inclusion, which salutes his exceptional contribution to the cultural and artistic development in Québec. Melokáane is also noticed around the world, being rated number 5 in the World Music Charts Europe (WMCE) and number 17 in the Transglobal World Music Chart (TWMC). In 2016, while Melokáane gets available wordwide, the prestigious AfroPop Worldwide (world-music online magazine and radio show in New York) quotes the album in its list of recommended records. Filled with irresistible rhythms that make fans bask in waves of contagious euphoria, Melokáane makes Élage Diouf a sensational Senegalese soul rocker.
Many concerts took place in Québec, Canada and United States in 2015-2016. In this momentum, a US tour is being developed for the Fall of 2017.
